Fluid Dynamics Lab

The Physics fluids lab studies flows and instabilities in water.  The Dantec equipment consists of dual high power Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers operating at 532 nm, special optics to convert the beams into a vertical sheet, a high-speed 2 Mp camera, a computer controlled power supply and Dynamic Studio software. The laser light sheet shines into a large tank in which neutrally buoyant glass spheres move with the water and reflect a small fraction of the light into the camera. Two images, taken about 1 ms apart allow us to compute the velocity, vorticity and other properties of the liquid flows.
